MP for Ablekuma North Constituency, Sheila Bartels [C], with new recruits

Sheila Bartels, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North Constituency, received conflicting comments after posting a Facebook post honouring the graduation of citizens who became police officers.

While a few people praised the message, a large number criticised it.

Following the many replies, the politician removed the original post. Later, she published two more postings, expressing her amazement at the volume and quality of the attention and reactions to her first post.

In her first post on Saturday, April 13, 2024, Sheila Bartels enthusiastically displayed the recruits with the caption: “Freshest group of graduating police officers from Ablekuma North constituency. “We wish you the best!”

Despite the apparent fulfilment demonstrated by these folks in the accompanying images, doubts have been raised about Sheila Bartels’ involvement in their recruiting.

While the specifics of her involvement were unknown, several people speculated that the legislator may have helped their recruitment into the police force. They contended that such acts harm the credibility of security agencies and should not be tolerated in the sphere of politics.

She then erased the post. On the same day, however, the legislator published two further posts about the matter. Among other things, she pondered why certain members of the public would believe that by publishing the photos, she had an involvement in how these people were effectively recruited.

“This is very interesting!” she exclaimed. “A few months back, I uploaded a photo of a police officer graduation ceremony that I attended, as well as one from my area. Nobody had an issue. Where did I mention that they were following protocol?

What is wrong with wishing new offers who have gone through a rigorous training and graduated the best? Honestly, what have we become???? Can their MP not congratulate them for their achievement? Geeezzz!!! And Ghanaweb decided to also report this?”

As the post received feedback, Sheila Bartels responded with another post, expressing her concern about how her previous post was interpreted. She was perplexed by the attempt to polarise the system, noting the politicisation of all actions and subjects as the reason.

“Indeed, we are in an election year so tempers are high. Understood… but really???!!” she exclaimed. “Can we no more appreciate the hard work of our sons and daughters when they achieve success after training? Why are we allowing politics to let us be devoid of celebrating each other’s successes?”.

She proceeded to explain why she removed the initial post:
“I have taken the post down, solely because I wouldn’t want the young men and women I sought to celebrate to pick the slack for me celebrating them. However, I’d like them to know, together with all who have gone through the rigorous training of the various services and have graduated, that I am proud of them and wish them all the best in their endeavour as they seek to serve the country as their profession.”
