Following the tragic death of Nigerian actor Junior Pope in a boat accident during a movie production, a video showing Ghanaian actor John Dumelo refusing to join a canoe for a scene due to safety concerns has emerged online.
On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Junior Pope and three crew members were killed when a boat hauling the crew of the movie he was cast in overturned at the River Niger Cable Point in Asaba.
His most recent social media video shows the actor sailing on a fast boat while highlighting the risk he is taking by not wearing a life jacket.
After the event, an old video of actor John Dumelo refusing to shoot a scene due to safety concerns reappeared online.

In the video, John Dumelo, who was on set alongside luminaries like Kwadwo Nkansah, Lil Win, and the late Bernard Nyarko, got out of a boat just before it was pushed into a river.
With a pretend weapon and no life jacket, the actor refused to enter the boat, prompting fears about his safety.
Despite his friends’ impassioned pleas and attempts to soothe his anxieties, the actor persisted and refused to board the boat.
The murder of Junior Pope has sparked a debate on social media about the safety and working conditions of performers on the continent.
Meanwhile, following Wednesday’s catastrophic boat tragedy, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has suspended all film productions involving boat excursions.
“Following the tragic incident of a boat mishap that claimed the life of Junior Pope and three other crew members on the waterside of the River Niger Cable Point Asaba on April 10th, all films involving riverine areas and boat riding are hereby suspended indefinitely.”
“There will be no shooting on Thursday, April 11, 2024, in all sites around the country, and the film ‘The Other Side of Life’ has been postponed permanently.
“Also, no actor is allowed to work with Adamma Luke as a producer till further notice, while we keep searching for the bodies of the remaining persons,” President of AGN, Emeka Rollas, said in a statement.
