Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah

Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah has revealed that he filed a police report against the General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.

The case was filed in reaction to the disconnection of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) from the national grid for an overdue debt of GH₵1.2 million.

According to the minister, he had already instructed the ECG Ashanti Region to contact him before disconnecting any public universities. However, he was not told of the disconnection at KTU, which prompted his complaint.

Following the Regional Minister’s complaint, the General Manager was arrested by the police and ordered to submit an official statement before being given self-recognizance release.

Lawyer Michael Nyantakyi, General Secretary of the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU), said in an interview with Kojo Marfo on AbusuaNkommo that the police told their members that they were investigating a case of instigating public commotion at KsTU.

Lawyer Nyantakyi claimed that they feel the Regional Minister filed the charge against their member for no misconduct.

“Looking at the circumstances that have transpired between the Regional Minister and our member, we believe it is the Regional Minister who made the complaint,” he stressed.

He stated that, while the situation had produced some irritation among ECG employees, they were working with them to restore calm.

“Our people are really upset over the terrible occurrence involving the Ashanti Regional Minister. However, we are in talks with them in an effort to restore calm,” he stated.

Background

On April 12, ECG workers travelled from Accra to Kumasi to conduct a revenue mobilisation effort. This initiative required that people or entities that owed large sums of money be removed from the national grid.

The Kumasi Technical University was one of the institutions unplugged because it owed the power distributor Ghc1.2 million.
