Reptiles, grasscutters take over abandoned Komenda Sugar Factory site

Reptiles are overrunning the Komenda Sugar Factory property, which has turned into a grasscutters’ hunting ground.

Under NDC’s John Dramani Mahama, the plant was nearly finished, but it was abandoned and is now decaying in the wilderness.

It was anticipated that by hiring more than 700 jobless kids, Komenda and the surrounding towns would see a decrease in unemployment.

Yaw Boagyan, the Central Regional Correspondent for EIB Network, visited the plant and discovered that most of the parts were damaged and the machines had corroded. The factory’s roofing sheets are also ripped.

Weeds have overtaken the sugar cane that was cultivated to supply the factory, and inhabitants are eating it.

In an interview, locals bemoaned the administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for abandoning the plant, stating that the young people in the community now had a harder time getting by.

They said that in order for them to be hired, President Akufo-Addo needed to finish the plant. They vowed to abstain from voting for the NPP in the forthcoming general election as a result of their disappointment.

They are also unhappy in Alan Kyerematen, the former trade minister who is from Komenda, for his inability to start the plant during his tenure as a minister.

When former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen visited the plant in 2023, it “magically” opened for business. However, three days later, it was closed down once more.

The homeowner claims that since they started the plant, they may continue it, hence they would vote for the NDC. They expect that Prof. Jane Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the NDC and a Komenda local, will assist in finishing it for operationalization.

The government has said that talks to restart the plant are now under progress.

In addition, the locals bemoaned the terrible state of the local roadways.
