AFRIMA 2022: Black Sherif, Gyakie, KiDi, Camidoh, others grab nominations (Full Details)

Ghana is overjoyed as many people have taken to various communication and social platforms to express their joy as new and current faces among Ghanaian artistes receive nominations at this year’s AFRIMA.

‘Kweku The Traveller’ Black Sherif leads the pack with the most nominations, followed by Gyakie, Nektunez, KiDi, Camidoh, Diana Hamilton, Amaarae, Major League DJz, and Jae5.

On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, the International Executive Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC), announced the official list of nominees for the 2022 edition.

From a total of 9,067 entries submitted, the AFRIMA jury selected 382 nominations across 39 categories to represent all five regions of Africa and the diaspora, the highest number ever recorded by the awards since their inception.

Only entries received between August 20, 2021, and August 5, 2022, were considered for nomination for this year’s awards.

This year, the Western African region leads the regional nominations with 134 nominations (35%); the Eastern African region follows closely with 69 nominations (18%); The Southern African region comes in second with 68 nominations, accounting for 17 percent; Central Africa comes in third with 52 nominations, accounting for 13. percent; and Northern Africa comes in third with 49 nominations.

Dominating the list f Ghanaian artists with the most nominations this year is Black Sherif with four nominations. He was nominated for the Best Male Artiste in Western Africa category with stiff competition from Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, Kizz Daniel, Rema and Wizkid.

His hit song ‘Kwaku The Traveller ‘secured him a spot in the Song of The Year category. Also in the fight for the award is Burna Boy (Last Last), Kizz Daniel (Buga), Fireboy DML (Peru Remix) and Rema (Calm Down).

Black Sherif has also been nominated for the award for Best Artist, Duo, or Group in African Hip-Hop. He was nominated in the same category for his appearance on UK-based Nigerian artiste Darkoo’s ‘Always.’

Gyakie, a musician, has been nominated for the Best Female Artiste in Western Africa award. Others in the category include Nigeria’s Asa, Simi, Tiwa Savage, Tems, Senegal’s Vivian Chidid, Cape Verde’s Soraia Ramos, and Oumou Sangare (Mali).

Amaarae, a singer/songwriter, received two nominations.

Amaarae’s ‘A Body, A Coffin,’ which appeared on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Prologue, earned her a nomination for Best Soundtrack Movies, Series, or Documentary.

Tems from Nigeria is also included in this category. She was also nominated for her cover of ‘No Woman, No Cry’ from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Amaarae received a second nomination in the Best Artist, Duo, or Group in African RnB & Soul category for her appearance on Tiwa Savage’s “Tales by Moonlight.”

KiDi’s Touch It Remix ft. Tyga, meanwhile, earned him a nomination for Best Artist, Duo, or Group in African Reggae, Ragga, and Dancehall.

The hit single Ameno Amapiano by Nektunez and Goya Menor is nominated for the African Fans Favourite award.

Oxlade, Lojay, Joeboy, and Bello Falcao will be tough competitors for the duo.

Camidoh was also nominated for Breakout Artiste of the Year, thanks to his hit song ‘Sugarcane Remix.’

Asake from Nigeria, Pheelz from South Africa, El Grande Toto from Morocco, and Costa Titch from Costa Rica are also in the running (South Africa).

Finally, Diana Asamoah, a gospel musician, was nominated for Best Female Artist in Africa Inspirational Music. With her song ‘Awurade Ye,’ she won the animation.

Ghana also missed out on Artiste of the Year, Best African Rapper/Lyricist, Producer of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year.

This year’s list is dominated by South African maverick Costa Titch and Congolese maestro Dadju, who each have six nominations.

Meanwhile, the All-Africa Music Awards 2022 will now take place from December 8 to 11, 2022.

The AFRIMA awards ceremony will be a four-day celebration of music, glitz, and glamour aimed at celebrating Africa, recognizing talents, and expanding the economic frontiers of the continent’s culture and creative industries. The event will begin with a welcome reception, followed by the AFRIMA Music Village, the host city tour, the Africa Music Business Summit, and the exclusive nominees’ party, and will conclude with a live awards ceremony broadcast to over 84 countries worldwide.

AFRIMA primarily stimulates conversations among Africans and the rest of the world, particularly about the potential of the creative arts for fostering genuine human enterprise and significantly contributing to social cohesion and sustainable development in Africa. The events program aligns with the AU Agenda 2063, which outlines Aspiration 05 as the development of the arts and culture sector, including its cultural and creative industries, to help the African economy grow.
