A youth group numbering about six hundred and thirty-eight (638) in the Dome-Kwabenya claiming to be members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in protest of the government’s failure to address their needs in the area.

The group led by Bright Opuni Karikari, an opinion leader at Taifa, said they were disappointed in the Member of Parliament (MP), Sara Adwoa Sarfo to spearhead developmental projects as she promised prior to the 2012 and 2016 Parliamentary elections.

At a press conference at Taifa Post Office on Sunday, Mr Karikari, who had declared his support for the NDC’s candidate, Madam Elikplim Akurugu, observed that the residents had become fed up with their MP who is also a senior official in the Akufo-Addo government.

“Our sister, the MP, Adwoa Sarfo has disappointed all of us. Our roads are very terrible; potholes have beome as deep as barrels and our people keep suffering from floods every now and then. We vote to get people to lead us and spearhead our developmental agenda, but today that can’t be said about our MP who we supported to Parliament,” Karikari told press men.

He said the MP did not show any concern to the residents during the COVID-19 lockdown and also failed to meet groups within the constituency on developmental issues, indicating that the NDC candidate rather has been of help to the people than the MP.

“The NDC candidate, Elikplim Akurugu is the one who has been meeting groups to assure them of her support. She has even helped work on the potholes on our roads which was our concern. She also distributed foodstuffs to the people during the lockdown period when our MP was nowhere to be found, so we will support the NDC to win the seat,” Karikari added.

It will be recalled that Adwoa Sarfo who is a Deputy Majority Leader faced a stiff opposition from Mike Oquaye Jnr, a son of the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Oquaye in the just ended NPP primary at Dome-Kwabenya where the incumbent defeated his opponent narrowly.

Sources say the MP’s performance in the last 8 years had come under scrutiny among top party officials in the constituency for which reason Mike Oquaye had the support to contest Madam Adwoa Sarfo.
