Ghana Would Have Become The Land Of Freebies That Reward Politicians For Ideas They Never Pay For With Their Own Money

This also happened 2 years ago today.

My friend, Ken Ofori Atta, Minister of Finance confessed on live TV thus,..”On the issue of free education, It may be that there has to be changes about the way we are administering it. I can’t take my child to Achimota School or Odorgono and leave him or her there and don’t pay anything when I can pay for 10 people. I think we need to have the data and begin to discriminate on the FREE SHS and allow those who can afford to pay. I think it is time to open up about the policy and take on board suggestions on how to improve it.”

Me: The data projections were made by IMANI way back in 2012. We even had kenkey breakfast with then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Nana Akufo Addo at his invitation, together with his current Chief of Staff, her PA Saratu Atta and a former chief director at education ministry, Mr. Essuman to explain IMANI’s core position on Free SHS. President asked us to help shape his free SHS vision. We agreed. We engaged Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko postitively and extensively too. Gabby had to ensure his party’s communicators understood the issues well. After the meeting I tasked Kofi BentilBentil our snr. Vice President to see to it that a detailed analysis of possible scenarios was done. Bright Simons Selorm Branttie Kofi and myself would meet endlessly to crunch the numbers. We assured Nana Addo that we would adduce data and analysis to shape the policy but we stood by our core idea that ‘means testing’ and discriminating against those who can easily afford to pay should guide the policy. But somehow, when the chips were down, it was the difference between politics and pragmatism😎🤣.The Finance Minister had on hindsight been pragmatic eventually vindicating IMANI’s long held position. But two years on, Akufo Addo’s ‘graduates’ have the last laugh and we are still paying from our pockets. Politicians do all. I hear the NDC is planning to gift us free tertiary promises. Ghana would have become the land of freebies that reward politicians for ideas they never pay for with their own money. Enjoy the freebies.

And oh.. perhaps this comment by President Nana Addo on November 25, 2017 settles the matter on the respect he has for IMANI although we do not agree on issues all the time. We jab each other too. 🤣😎..
President Nana Addo in his own words at the 50th birthday anniversary celebration of Ace Ankomah, one the most influential legal and activist minds of our time ”
“I saw Franklin Cudjoe as I was coming in. And I heard the statement, ‘Now, the most important man in Ghana.” “And I had a feeling he was going to say ‘Franklin Cudjoe.’ Only to hear that it was me that he was talking about.”
“Because he [Franklin Cudjoe] is certainly the most important man in Ghana.”- President Akufo-Addo. 25/11/2017.”
