Eastern Region: Residents of COVID-19 affected areas call for lockdown

0

Residents of Lower Manya Krobo where all cases of the coronavirus in the Eastern Region have been recorded are calling for the immediate imposition of a restriction on movement or a partial lockdown of the area following at least 28 confirmed cases in the municipality.

The proponents believe imposing a lockdown, though would affect their sources of livelihood, remains the only option to combat the spread of the pandemic to other parts of the municipality and the eastern region as a whole.

With less than half of the 244 samples of workers of the AFCONS Infrastructure Limited sent to the Noguchi Institute for Medical Research confirming 28 positive cases, residents are anxious about the fate of the community.

This followed a first confirmed case of the virus on March 31, 2020.

Mama Zimbi, a cosmetics seller at Abansey in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality had this to say, “We are hearing stories about our community, that the disease has is prevalent here and I’m afraid so I prefer that the government should impose a lockdown on this area for about one month, we should be in the house,” she urged.

The proponents mostly business people while admitting the implications of any restrictions of movement on their businesses however said the only option to fight the spread of the pandemic to other parts of the municipality and the eastern region as a whole is a lockdown.

Maa Adwoa, a provisions seller shared similar sentiments “I believe this place should equally be locked down so that all of us can be free from the virus, otherwise it will be very problematic. Same way they locked the cities, so must they lock our community too.” She opined.

A seamstress by name Akos was not left out of the call for a lockdown either.

To her, locking down the area is long overdue as people could easily transmit the virus to others. “We all take vehicles and it’s very easy for someone to infect others in the vehicle,” said Miss Akos.

Many more others had similar opinions to share.

They believed failure to lockdown parts of the eastern region with reported cases could result in mass community infections.

Meanwhile, not everybody was for a lockdown.

Those with opposing opinions, though in the minority, argued that any such decision could adversely affect their sources of livelihood.

One of them, a mechanic at Madam, a suburb of Lower Manya Krobo pleaded with the government to spare the area a lockdown as its effects on them could be dire: “As for the lockdown, we plead with the government because it’ll be a big problem for us,” he noted.

Though no yet of the virus outside the camp has been recorded yet, this is doing very little to allay the fears of the anxious residents.

Ghana’s current covid-19 confirmed cases as at April 10, 2020 stand at 408.
