Nine Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have come together to sue President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Supreme Court. He is being sued for the removal of the Auditor General Daniel Domelevo. Daniel was asked to proceed on a 167-day accumulated leave.

On Monday, a statement was released by the CSOs that said that they had hoped that the President would reconsider his decision.

However, certain developments since the Auditor-General was forced to leave his office have only worsened the situation. That is why they are seeking the intervention of the courts.

For this reason,  a full statement was released by the CSOs announcing their decision. Being represented by their lawyers, they filed a writ at the Supreme Court. They challenged the June 29, 2020 directive of the President that had sent the Auditor-General, Mr. Daniel Domelevo, on involuntary leave.

Furthermore, the President who appointed Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu to act as Auditor-General during the 167 working days because the Auditor-General is supposed to be away on forced leave.

So,on7th July, 2020, a coalition of CSOs called a press conference to appeal to the President to rescind on his directive on the Auditor-General.

The coalitions of CSOs, the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), and the English-Speaking section of the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) also implored the President to reconsider his decision.

They emphasized on the fact that, the July 7 press conference stated categorically that they would consider taking a legal action to defend the Constitution and the independence of the Auditor-General should it become necessary. Unfortunately, the president refused to rescind his decision.

We want to safeguard the independence of the Office of the Auditor-General and all independent constitutional offices so that they can discharge their lawful mandates effectively without fear or favour.
