Adongo blames Ken Ofori Atta for the dismal situation of the economy

Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency in Ghana’s Upper East Region, Ken Ofori-Atta, has called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta accountable for the country’s economic woes. Mr. Isaac Adongo claims that the sector minister has been downplaying the economy and hence must be held accountable for the current situation.

Mr Adongo claimed that the Finance Minister and his colleagues at the Finance Ministry were overheard saying, among other things, that the government is broke and that the economy cannot be resurrected without the controversial e-levy. “These actions of the minister have, over time, led to massive capital flight from the country,” he argued. “Many of the people who invested in the bonds floated by the Finance Ministry have withdrawn their investments for fear of losing their capital”, he noted.

“These investments are repatriated in dollar denominations and not in cedis. This is the reason the economy is suffering in spite of all the loans and grants this government has had over the past six years,” he noted.

“Where in the world will you see a minister responsible for managing the economy talking down the situation he is supposed to be managing,” Mr Adongo quizzed.

He stated that Mr Ofori Atta’s actions are detrimental to the country’s economic progress. “This action on the part of the minister has the potential to further drive the economy into the abyss,” he stressed.

In an interview with Citi FM in Accra, the NDC MP was reacting to both the minister’s and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-statements. Addo’s Source: africaneditors.com
