Scrap collector busted with N2m worth of parts, cash in Calabar
CALABAR—Usman Umaru, a 27-year-old scrap collector, was caught by the Cross River Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for possessing cash and electrical components worth more than N2 million.
Charles Brown, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, revealed that Umaru was captured vandalising an empty new building in Calabar during the night.
Although his colleague, Yusuf, escaped, Umaru was captured.
According to the NSCDC commander, Umaru and his colleagues were involved in multiple acts of vandalism in Calabar and its vicinity.
He stated, “Acting on intelligence, the NSCDC raided the one-story building and apprehended Umaru with N250,000 in cash and various electrical wires, switches, and lamp holders.”
“Umaru was caught in possession of narcotics and charms when he was arrested. “He has confessed to his crimes and will be arraigned in court,” he stated.
He added that they scout for prospective theft targets during the day and conduct their operations at night. Brown advocated for stronger regulations on their activities to prevent real collectors from damaging the industry’s image.
Furthermore, the NSCDC Commandant proclaimed the command’s commitment to combating vandalism, cable theft, and unlawful crude oil diversion across the state.
