“The tweet I wrote to Davido transformed my life since I never thought I’d be able to afford to roof this property because” – Adebisi Michael, 33, tells his story.

I started football viewing center two months ago and all I could afford was a tv, a stabilizer and a small generator. I can’t show more than a match at a time and also battling with a faultful generator. I would love to have two more televisions, a UPS, a fan and a standby gen. https://t.co/IpG7kQggsP pic.twitter.com/B5DoFQduiB

Adebisi Michael, a 33-year-old physically challenged man from Ilesha, Osun State, Nigeria, owns a video centre. He was sitting in the shop doing nothing when one of his brothers came in and showed him a tweet in which famed Nigerian afrobeat singer Davido said he needed people with business ideas to support them, so he promptly submitted his as follows:
‘I just dey for shop wen one of my brodas just enta show me Davido Tweet say im wan sponsor pipo wey get business idea oh, na im I just quickly drop my own’ – Adebisi says in Pidgin
“The strange thing is that Davido read my post and liked it, and even if he didn’t respond at the time, people bombarded my dm with promises to help me, which makes me even more shocked and kept asking myself, if we are indeed in Nigeria, because I didn’t believe there were nice people in the country like that”
As he states in pidgin below, he spent part of the donations he received from charitable individuals to decorate and roof his video centre:
“na part of the tin dem give me na im I take roof this place bicos dis place no dey like dis bifor”
He went on to say that people frequently ask him how he ended up behind the wheel, and according to what his mother told him, he was not born disable but it all started when he was six years old and he was walking normally until he fell asleep one night and awoke paralysed. After being sent to several hospitals and herbal centres he still remained being in disability condition.
He was taken to many hospitals and herbal centres, but he remained disabled.
Michael Adebisi’s Educational Background and Post-Graduation Challenges
I studied industrial chemistry at the famed Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, but after I finished, I was unable to find work, so I decided to start my own business, creating and selling Izal, air freshener, and liquid soap to support myself.
List of Challenges in his business
- “Because I live in a sparsely populated location, the problems I encounter in this business are significant. For example, I don’t get many people to come to my video centre to watch matches.
- It is not every football match I show in my video centre, there are some matches I don’t show all because even if I show I don’t get people to come watch such Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City matches because they don’t have fans here. It is only Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United matches I show because they have lot of fans who comes in to pay and watch their matches. Without the aforementioned three teams there are no matches that brings good business here
- Thirdly, some of the equipment I use here are outdated looking like 1960 equipment I placed here.
The reason why I started this job is because I don’t want to go to the street and beg just because I am disable” – Michael Adebisi
