Legendary Tina Turner, ‘What’s love got to do with it’ singer dies aged 83

Tina Turner, the legendary rock and soul singer, has died at the age of 83, according to several media reports.

With her back-to-back hits in the 1960s and 1970s, the musician overcame adversity and abuse to become one of the most successful performers of all time.

Turner died Tuesday at her home in Küsnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland, after a protracted illness, according to her management. According to a Press Enterprise story, she became a Swiss citizen a decade ago.

‘What’s love got to do with it?’ is a song written by Graham Lyle and Terry Britten that Tina Turner recorded for her fifth studio album, Private Dancer (1984).

In May 1984, Capitol Records released it as a single from Private Dancer, and it became Turner’s best-selling single.

She sold over 150 million albums worldwide, won 12 Grammys, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Ike in 1991 (and on her own in 2021), and was honoured at the Kennedy Centre in 2005, with Beyoncé and Oprah Winfrey among those honouring her.

In 2021, her life became the subject of a film, a Broadway musical, and an HBO documentary, which she dubbed her public goodbye.
