Bob Marley’s Grandson, Jo Mersa Marley son of Stephen Marley dies at 31

Legendary Reggae musician from Jamaican, Bob Marley’s grandchild Jo Mersa Marley who is also a musician, died at the age of 31.

Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley died at the age of 31. Continue reading to learn more about the late musician, who was the grandson of Bob Marley and the son of Stephen Marley.

Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, the first son of Stephen Marley and the grandson of Bob Marley, died at the age of 31, a representative for the late musician confirmed to Rolling Stone on December 27. Although no cause of death has been revealed, some speculate that he may have died from asthma because he was asthmatic.

Following his death, public figures have paid tribute to the Jamaican-born artist and the musical legacy he has left behind.

“My heartfelt sympathies to Joseph’s friends and associates and to the Reggae music fraternity and fans everywhere” Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness tweeted on December 27. “His untimely death at the age of 31 is a huge loss to the music as we look forward to the next generation.”

“May he find Eternal Peace as we mourn his loss during this season of goodwill when we celebrate with family and friends our love for each other” Holness said in a follow-up message.

Meanwhile, Mark J. Golding, the president of the People’s National Party, took to the app to mourn the “tragic loss” of Jo Mersa.

“A talented young reggae artiste, son of Stephen Marley & grandson of Bob Marley at only 31 yrs old,” Golding wrote on Twitter Dec. 27. “The loss of a child is a devastating blow no parent should face, my condolences to Stephen & the entire family.”

Jo Mersa was born into the Marley family, which includes Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella Marley, and was exposed to music at a young age. He recalled being called up on stage at Melody Makers concerts in 2014 to help perform the hit “Look Who’s Dancing.”

“We would get up on stage with my brothers and sisters,” Jo Mersa told Rolling Stone in 2014, “and there was a certain time where they would just give us the mic and we’d do our certain favorite part of the song.”

And it wouldn’t be long before Jo Mersa was releasing his own music. In 2014, he released his debut EP Comfortable, which features dancehall, R&B, and EDM sounds, according to Rolling Stone.

The project arose from Jo Mersa’s desire to expand his musical horizons, despite the fact that he was reggae royalty.

“I am one of the new generation of Marleys, but I am still experimenting at the same time,” he told Rolling Stone in 2014. “My plan is to do something new with my roots.”

Jo Mersa’s debut EP would not be his last. In 2020, he will release Everlasting (Remixes), and in 2021, he will release Eternal, a seven-track EP.
