I am not retiring now – Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan

Black Stars general captain and top striker Asamoah Gyan has shot down considerations of him retiring from football, saying he has a lot more football in him.

The 34-year-old former Liberty Professionals striker who has represented Ghana since 2003 featured at AFCON 2019 and saw little of football.

He has an impressive start at NorthEast United in the India Super League but sustained an injury which many believe he could use as an excuse to hang his boots for good.

But the entertainer cum player says he is not ready to call it a quit to his incredible 17 years footballing career and says he is still motivated to continue playing football and won’t give ears to people who say he should retire.

The former Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor and Sunderland star is confident and thinks he can still play till he can no longer run.

“For me, what will make somebody quit football, is the deal dedication but it is still there”, Asamoah who is also called ‘Baby Jet’ said

“So I feel I have a lot to prove and on the field; when I see certain things, I feel like I can still do it.

“A lot of people have tried but I always say to myself I will call it a day on my own terms: Nobody can retire me.”

Gyan made his international debut at the age of 17 when he scored on his senior international debut for Ghana against Somalia on 19 November 2003 in the 90th minute.

Gyan is currently without a club and reports say he is likely to join Kumasi Asante Kotoko when football resumes.

Although he has not won anything significant with the Black Stars, he was honoured at Al Ain FC with the UAE Pro League: 2011–12, 2012–13, 2014–15, UAE President’s Cup: 2013–14 and Arabian Gulf Super Cup: 2012.

Individually, he has won the BBC African Footballer of the Year: 2010, CAF Team of the Year: 2010, 2013, 2014, UAE Pro League Top Scorer: 2011–12, 2012–13, 2013–14, AFC Champions League Top Scorer: 2014, AFC Foreign Player of the Year: 2014.
