Oluwashina Okeleji, a BBC correspondent, has criticised Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote for breaking a pledge he made to the Super Eagles of Nigeria following their victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

In South Africa, Okeleji reported, the team was guaranteed $1 million by the business magnate following their victory at the AFCON.

He went on to say that business tycoon Tony Elumelu had also broken his $500,000 pledge to the AFCON-winning squad.

“But Uncle Tony has not fulfilled his $500,000 promise to the Super Eagles for winning the #AFCON in 2013,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“Another man yet to redeem his pledge to the AFCON-winning squad and officials is Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who promised the team $1 million,” he added.

Nigeria won their third AFCON championship, defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the championship match.

Oluwashina Okeleji’s admission comes after Nigerian photographer Pooja Media revealed that Tony Elumelu was approached about purchasing a premier league team in Nigeria.

“Tony Elumelu confirms that the Minister of Sports, Senator Enoh has approached him and other top investors to buy/acquire at least one big NPFL club in Nigeria,” Pooja tweeted.
