Ballanta certifies 7 students:

The Ballanta Academy of Music and The Performing Arts has on Wednesday December 9, 2020 at the Academy certified seven students on Music theory: Jesse Manley, a Piano Grade 1 and Sira Traore piano pre-grade higher, of the Music Teachers’ Board (MTB) of the UK.

Alpha Bundu grade 1 with Distinction, Prince Kamara grade 2 with Distinction, Maxwell Apka, grade 4, Derrick Atere-Roberts, grade 5 with Merit, and Henry Charles grade 5 with Merit, of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in the UK.

Music Teachers’ Board (MTB) offers instrumental graded qualifications by teachers for teachers.

It is a leading examination board in the UK that has been developing qualifications for several years. The Music exams are an invaluable tool for teachers by providing targets and motivation for their pupils.

Whilst the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is also an examinations board, and registered charity based in London, UK, which conducts examinations in music at centres around the world.

It is one of the four examination boards accredited to award graded exams and diplomas in music within the UK’s National Qualifications Framework (along with the London College of Music, Rock School Ltd. and Trinity College London).

Jesse Manley a grade 1 Piano student said that, to broaden his knowledge in music, he enrolled at the academy in 2019. “My passion for music made me to come to Ballanta; I believe that coming to the academy will not only make me a good instrumentalist but an outstanding musician,” he said.

According Manley, he used to piano before coming to Ballanta, but was not good as he is today. He added that his way of playing the Piano has improved over the years and now has a confidence in playing the instrument in his church.

Manley is the first male student to have certified with a MTB music certificate.
He concluded, “I am feeling very proud to be called a student of Ballanta. I have learnt so many things since I enrolled at the academy and it has also exposed me to many people I have not met before. The certificate that has been awarded to me today, I believe that the certificate would help me secure a job and also create job for myself.”

In her statement, the principal of the Academy, Theodora Hamilton expressed gratitude to the students for their effortlessness. She also thanked the staff and the members who made it possible for the academy.

She said that the institution focuses on teaching and learning, adding that the Academy as an institution offers a unique form of learning in Sierra Leone.

She added that the Academy works hard to enrich musical talents in the country and provides an opportunity for professionals. She also emphasized that the Academy offers tuition in various music courses, and has been an examination centre for the Associated Board Royal School of Music in UK (ABRSM).

Hamilton said that the vision of Ballanta Academy is to be a place of development, promotion and research of West African music, providing first class tuitions in classical, modern and indigenous music for the people of Sierra Leone.

“Our mission is to exist and provide a centre for music education and entertainment of indigenous and international content through practice training and research to the people in Sierra Leone, thereby, providing a platform for nurturing talents to be internationally recognized,” she said.
