Afenyo-Markin apologises after loose talk

When Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin attacked Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, John Mahama’s running mate, she was accused of not carrying out her previous government positions’ mandates. She also attacked the former UCC Vice-Chancellor, saying that her advanced age gave her no hope for the future and no succession plan. This caused near chaos in Parliament.

Afenyo-Markin asserted that Mahama had made a mistake in appointing her as his running partner, implying that the two stood for the same, outdated NDC party. Since he had nothing to lose and Mahama was running with a running partner who was over 70 years old and, in his opinion, had done poorly in her capacity as Minister of Education, he said that Mahama lacked urgency.

The statements infuriated the NDC lawmakers in Parliament, who called for Afenyo-Markin to provide an apology. Minority MPs stated that he could not back an 80-year-old Akufo-Addo before attacking the country’s first female vice chancellor, a 70-year-old lady. The Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, decided to adjourn the House for an hour due to the tension.

Following the intermission, the Majority Leader retracted his remarks, and the discussion on the State of the Nation Address proceeded. NDC members persisted in voicing their disapproval of the comments made against their running partner, highlighting her achievements and calling for dignity for her as a female leader.
