Beast 2022 American Film is asurvival thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur and based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan. Idris Elba, Iyana Halley, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Sharlto Copley star in the film. The plot revolves around Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed man, and his two teenage daughters, who travel to a South African game reserve managed by Martin Battles, an old family friend and wildlife biologist. When a lion, a survivor of bloodthirsty poachers, begins stalking them, what begins as a healing journey becomes a fight for survival.

Universal Pictures released Beast in the United States on August 19, 2022.

Critics gave the movie mixed reviews.

Plot

Dr. Nate Samuels, recently widowed, and his teenaged daughters, Meredith and Norah, arrive in South Africa for a vacation at the Mopani Game Reserve. Martin Battles, a biologist and Mopani manager who introduced Nate and his wife, reunites Nate with an old friend. Nate and the girls are taken to the village where Nate’s wife grew up by Martin. Nate confesses to Martin his guilt over being absent when his family needed him the most. The trip is intended to reconnect him with his daughters.

Martin and his family visit the reserve’s restricted areas the following day. Martin takes them to see a local lion pride and notices that one of them is injured. Martin discovers that the majority of the people in a nearby Tsonga community have died. Martin rushes back to report the discovery, suspecting a lion is to blame. Nate comes across an injured Tsonga man on the road and is unable to help him. Martin is mauled while pursuing the lion. It then ambushes Nate, who seeks refuge in his car. Meredith speeds away, but collides with a tree, leaving them stranded.

Martin radios Nate on a walkie-talkie to warn him to stay away, claiming that the lion is using Martin as bait to lure the others out. Nate assembles a tranquillizer rifle because the radio is out of range to contact help. He confronts the lion in the hopes of subduing it long enough to recover Martin and return to civilization. The lion attacks, and Meredith uses the distraction to save Martin. After the lion knocks the gun out of Nate’s hands, Norah stabs it with a tranquillizer dart, causing the lion to flee. Meredith returns Martin to the car while Nate tends to his wound.

As night falls, Martin, who is now recovering, speculates that the lion went rogue after poachers killed its pride. Soon after, the poachers arrive and agree to transport the group to the village, only to discover Martin, a zealous anti-poacher, inside the car. The lion attacks and scatters the poachers, killing the majority of them. Nate gets past the lion and discovers the poachers’ truck keys. Back at the car, Martin manages to keep the lion at bay long enough for the sisters to flee, though Meredith suffers a deep laceration to her side. Martin sacrifices himself by setting off an explosion that severely burns the lion after the car crashes into a ravine. Nate fires up the truck and takes off with Meredith and Norah.

Nate treats Meredith’s wound in an abandoned schoolhouse before foraging for water. The lion appears and pursues the girls, but Nate appears and scares it away. Nate locks his daughters in a room and promises to return after he has subdued the lion. Nate attracts the local lion pride that Martin helped raise by luring it into an opening. The pride patriarchs intervene and kill the rogue lion just as it is about to attack Nate. A Mopani employee arrives and saves Nate as he collapses.

Nate, who is recovering in a hospital, tells his daughters that he loves them. After a while, the three return to the preserve, this time as a family.

Production

In September 2020, it was announced that Idris Elba would star in Beast, a new Universal Pictures film directed by Baltasar Kormákur and based on an original idea by Jaime Primak-Sullivan. [7] Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley, and Leah Sava Jeffries joined the cast in June 2021.

Filming in South Africa began on June 1, 2021, and lasted ten weeks. There was also shooting in the rural provinces of Limpopo and the Northern Cape, as well as in Cape Town.

The film score was written by Steven Price.

The soundtrack has been released by Back Lot Music.

Box office

Beast had grossed $12.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $10.6 million in other territories as of August 22, 2022, for a worldwide total of $23.1 million.

Beast was released alongside Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in the United States and Canada, and its opening weekend was expected to gross around $10 million from 3,743 theatres.

On its first day, the film grossed $4.3 million, including $925,000 from Thursday night previews. It went on to gross $11.6 million in its first weekend, trailing only Super Hero. African-Americans made up 34% of the population, followed by Caucasians (26%), Hispanics (23%), and Asians (9%). Almost half of the opening weekend audience was over 35, and a third was over 45.

Critical response

Rotten Tomatoes reports that 65% of 127 reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.1/10. According to the site’s critics, “Do you want to see Idris Elba fight a lion? The admirably lean but ultimately disposable Beast is the film for you.”  The film received a weighted average score of 53 out of 100 from Metacritic, indicating “mixed or average reviews.” [12] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a “B” on a scale of A+ to F, while PostTrak gave it a 65% overall positive rating, with 46% saying they would definitely recommend it.
