Thomas Partey regarded as ‘EU player’ at Atletico Madrid as he holds Spanish passport

0

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is one of the many foreigners at Atletico Madrid with Spanish citizenship, GHANASoccernet.com can report.

This means the 26-year-old, who joined Los Colchoneros during the 2012/13 season, does not  occupy one of the three non-European Union spots in the Atleti squad.

To be granted citizenship or qualify as a European player, one should have stayed in Spain for  5+ years  or have ancestors from that country.

In La Liga, a club cannot name more than three non-EU players in a match day squad.

Other Atlético players such as José María Giménez (Uruguay), Diego Costa (Brazil) and Ángel Correa (Argentina) have been living in Spain for a long time and already have a Spanish passport
