Spanish Actress Verónica Echegui Passes Away at 42
The Spanish film industry is mourning the loss of talented actress Verónica Echegui, who passed away on August 25 after a battle with cancer. She was just 42 years old.
Born in Madrid, Echegui rose to fame with her breakout role in Bigas Luna’s 2006 film “Yo Soy La Juani,” earning her widespread recognition. She went on to appear in nearly 30 films, including “Make A Wish,” “8 Citas,” and “El Patio De Mi Cárcel,” produced by the renowned Almodovar brothers.

Echegui’s impressive career spanned international collaborations, working with acclaimed directors like Icíar Bollaín and Eduardo Chapero Jackson. Her notable roles included “Katmandú, Un Espejo En El Cielo,” “The Cold Light of Day,” and “You’re Killing Me Susana,” alongside Gael García Bernal.
In addition to her acting prowess, Echegui also ventured into directing, winning a prestigious Goya award for her short film “Tótem Loba” in 2022. At the time of her passing, she was working on the script for her first feature film.
Echegui’s final role was in the Netflix thriller series “Ciudad De Sombras,” currently in post-production. Her legacy as a talented actress and filmmaker will be deeply missed by the industry and her fans.
