Senegal new stadium: FIFA president, CAF president, football legends, many others attend the opening ceremony

  • Senegal has opened a stadium with a capacity of 50,000 people.
  • At the opening ceremony, both the FIFA President and the CAF President gave speeches.
  • Khalilou, a FIFA legend, scored the game’s first goal, much to the pleasure of the crowd.

The official inauguration ceremony of Stade de Senegal, a state-of-the-art stadium located in Diamniadio, 30 kilometers from Dakar, presided over by President Macky Sall, was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, CAF President Patrice Motsepe, and other football stars. A glittering line-up of Senegalese football luminaries took on some of Africa’s most cherished football legends in the first ever match to be played at the stadium, making the inauguration of the 50,000-seat venue all the more remarkable.

Prior to the start of the competition, Head of State Macky Sall addressed the crowd, expressing his delight at the opportunity to officially open the stadium so soon after the Lions of Teranga, Senegal’s national football team, won the CAF African Cup of Nations.

In honor of his predecessor Abdoulaye Wade’s significant role in Senegalese society, he also confirmed that the venue will be named after him.

In his remarks, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe acknowledged the stadium’s significance for Senegal and Africa. Following that, FIFA President Sepp Blatter delivered a speech in which he said, “This star shines bright for Senegal all over the world,” pointing to the renowned green star on the Senegal national football jersey. “What an honor and awe it is to be here today!” The game began with Senegal’s Khalilou Fadiga scoring the first goal at the new stadium, much to the pleasure of the local spectators.

The African Legends team didn’t hang around for long, and Augustin Jay Jay Azuka Okotcha of Nigeria netted the equalizer, bringing the exhibition game to a 1-1 draw.
Adama Barrow, President of The Gambia, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of Guinea-Bissau, George Weah, President of Liberia, Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, were among the distinguished visitors at the event. As part of the inauguration ceremony, heads of state and football fans were treated to a celebration of Senegalese culture. Les Kumpa, a group of mythological and mystical woodland figures clad in straw that usually appear in Senegal and Gambia to honor nature, sharing, and community, was one of the highlights. Youssou N’Dour, a world-renowned Senegalese artist, closed the ceremony with a performance that included traditional wrestlers and musicians like as Baba Maal, Ismael Lo, and Waly Seck.
The Youth Olympic Games in Senegal were originally scheduled for this year, but were postponed to 2026 owing to the Covid-19 outbreak.
