IGNORE PRESIDENT’S EASING OF SOCIAL DISTANCING IN CARS-ASEPA APPEALS TO GPRTU

Yesterday during the President’s address to the Nation, one of the things that caught our attention was the easing of Social Distancing in transport services thereby paving way for drivers and transport owners to operate at full capacity.

Considering the Nature of our public transport system and how close passengers sits to each other, we believe this decision by the President was not backed by Science or data.

Now Ghana is recording an average of 840 cases a day with a number of backlogs of tests, we believe this number could go up tremendously if the ban on social distancing in public transports is lifted.

We are therefore appealing to GPRTU, other Transport Unions, Transport Owners and Drivers to please put their safety and the safety of the General Public first and Ignore this directive by the President.

We are contacting the Ministry of Transport as soon as possible to open talks on how a comprehensive support plan can be put in place to support Drivers,Transport Owners and the Unions to augment the losses occasioned due to the adherence of the social distancing protocols in cars.
