Kumasi central market demolition commences despite resistance (Video)

The demolition of the Kumasi Central Market for the Redevelopment Project have started demolishing, the old market’s remaining structures is to be cleared to ensure that the project is completed on time.

The KMA (Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly) has removed the final batch of sellers and their merchandise from the market.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council had given traders till midnight on September 12, 2021, to clear the market and allow contractors to work.

The vendors have fought their removal on multiple occasions, claiming that the KMA has not done enough to establish the necessary infrastructure at the Racecourse market, where they have been requested to transfer their enterprises.

When a group of journalists visited the market on Sunday, however, the sellers were frantically removing their items to make the deadline.

Mr Emmanuel Danso, Consultant to Contracta Construction UK Company, the project’s contractors, warned the GNA that the traders’ ongoing occupation was delaying the project and risking the country’s credit facility.

Bulldozers and excavators were spotted dismantling structures to make space for the project to continue when the Ghana News Agency visited the market on Monday morning.

The affected vendors have been assigned temporary venues to conduct business at the Racecourse, Abinkyi, the new Kejetia market, and other satellite markets in the metropolis, according to Ms Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, KMA Public Relations Officer.
