HIV PREVALENCE : Pepfar Focusing On Activities In Western Region Amid Covid-19

About 40 Journalists from both western and western North regions are undergoing a seven week training on “HIV” in order to reach the 95-95-95 target.

The target aims for 95% of people living with HIV to know their HIV status; 95% of people who know their status to be on treatment; and 95% of people on treatment to have suppressed viral loads by 2030.

The online training programme organized by the US Embassy’s President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief “PEPFAR” with support from the African Center for Development Reporting (ACEDEV) and Media Health Link seeks to end HIV and AIDS by 2030.

The US Embassy’s 95-95-95 target is piloted Western and Western north regions with the aim to achieve epidemic control which will be replicated in other regions.

The Western regional HIV prevelence stands at 1.35% with 130 AIDS death in Sekondi-Takoradi across all ages

Making a presentation, The Program manager of the National AIDS control program under the Ghana Health Service Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo noted that on the HIV Epidemiological situation, 58% of all people living with HIV know their status, 47% of people diagnosed with HIV infections received antiretroviral therapy and 68% of people receiving antiretroviral therapy are having viral suppressed, hence the need to let more people know their status, get treatment and have their viral loads suppressed.

As at 2019, 1.7% of Ghana’s population are HIV infected.
1.8% of prisoners are infected with HIV, 2.0% of pregnant women attending Antenatal care are positive, female sex workers have 4.6% of them infected and Men who have sex with men stands at 18% positive.

He added that to achieve 95-95-95 target, there is a short term intervention which is expected to be achieved by the end of 2020, Medium term plan by 2023 and the long term plan “treatment” to be achieved by 2030.

Dr Ayisi Addo people living with HIV to continously take their medicine, follow advice from healthcare providers and also adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines to keep themselves and others safe from the disease.

In order to achieve the 95-95-95 target of epedimic control by 2023, Journalists have been urged to campaign for 95-95-95 and destigmatization of persons living with HIV.
