Born on 1st September in 1940, Prof. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi was raised in Kumasi in the Ashanti region. He is a proud son of Kumawu (Ashanti Region) and attended Adisadel College (indeed epitomizing their motto “Vel Primus Vel Cum Primis”) in Cape Coast.

He begun his medical journey in 1961. He was a member of the pioneer first batch of students of University of Ghana Medical School in Legon., completing in 1969.

He was introduced to Anesthesia by chance through the late Professor K.A Oduro who recognized his potential. He progressed through this profession passionately and by choice. He is privileged to have worked with Dr. Mrs. Nelson, a Consultant Anesthesiologist at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and one of the founding members of Anesthesiology in Ghana.

In 1972 he travelled to the United Kingdom for postgraduate studies thanks to a scholarship opportunity orchestrated by the late Prof. K. Oduro. He worked at Kings College Hospital, London for sometime. He successfully passed his postgraduate examination in 1974 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (UK ).

He returned to Ghana in 1974 and joined the University of Ghana Medical School as a Lecturer and worked at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. He became a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons on its formation in 1974. He was the founding Chairman of the Faculty of Anesthesia and Critical Care. He was a founding member of the Executive Board as well as a Member of the College Council. He was thus the initiator of Critical Care in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, going on to facilitate the drawing of a curriculum for postgraduate training for the College.

In 1976, he orchestrated the first West African College of Surgeons, (WACS) meeting in Ghana. He is also a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Surgeons and Physicians and also served as the first Chairperson of the Faculty of Anaesthesia.

He worked in Saudi Arabia and Sweden for some time as a Consultant Anaesthesiologist.

He was the President of the Ghana Medical Association from 2003-2005. In 2005, he worked in Sierra Leone under the United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Agency, as a Consultant Anesthetist to curb the high maternal mortality rate. This was done through the training of midwives to become Nurse Anaesthetists in aid of Emergency Obstetric Care. Maternal mortality rate in Sierra Leone subsequently improved from 2000 deaths in 100,000 live births to 700 deaths in 100,000 live births.

In December, 2013, he was inducted into the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and received an award for Outstanding Achievements in Postgraduate Medical Education.

Prof. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi is currently the Board Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority and works part-time at FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital, he still continues to lecture on various anesthesia-related platforms across the country.

Prof. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi is a disciplinarian who thrives on peace. He believes in empathy, equity, and treating others as one would want to be treated. The keys to his success story have been humility, hard work, and forgiving quickly while letting go. He loves to dance and read.

He is a Christian and is married to Her Excellency Dr. Mrs. Mokowa Blay Adu-Gyamfi. She was his classmate in medical school and is the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission and former Ambassador to Sierra Leone. They have been happily married for 51 years and are blessed with two children, grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
