CAF Ready To Implement One Off Finals For Its Club Competitions

Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia have all submitted bids to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host the final of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League. In addition, the organizing committee has also revealed the only nominated stadium for the final of the CAF Confederation Cup. This season will see the introduction of a one-off final held at a predetermined venue, following in the path set out by the UEFA Champions League in Europe.

Cameroon is bidding to host the African Champions League final at the newly-constructed Japoma Stadium in the port city of Douala, a venue which will be used during the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in April. Morocco, meanwhile, have put up the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca as their proposed venue, while Tunisia is bidding to host the match at the Rades Olympic Stadium in Tunis.

CAF has explained that the three member associations submitted their bids during the February 11-20 timeline, while the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Stadium in Rabat, Morocco is the only nomination to host the final game of the Confederation Cup. An ad hoc committee, chaired by CAF first vice president Constant Omari Selemani, will review the bids, taking into consideration key facilities such as infrastructure, accommodation, medical facilities and other factors, according to a CAF statement. “A final decision is expected to be made by the CAF Emergency Committee on March 12, 2020,” the statement concluded.
