Asamoah Gyan’s Manager Reveals Ex-Ghana Skipper’s Dislike For ‘General Captain’ Position

The decision by Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor to scrap ‘General Captain’ position has been welcomed by Asamoah Gyan as according to his business manager, Anim Addo, the legendary striker never liked it.

Gyan was made General Captain by former coach Kwasi Appiah prior to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt. Andre Ayew was confirmed as substantive captain.

However, Akonnor last weekend made changes to the leadership of the team, with the Gyan’s position non-existent anymore. Akonnor maintained Ayew as captain, with Thomas Partey and goalkeeper Richard Ofori assisting the Swansea star.

“Asamoah Gyan has held successful meetings with the Black Stars Management Committee. The Asamoah Gyan camp has never liked the idea of the ‘General Captain’.

There was no way he was going the wear the armband when he isn’t the captain anymore. Due to his love for Ghana, he returned to play for the team on the request of the President and other top officials even when he announced his retirement,” Anim Addo informed Nhyira FM.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, the 34-year-old considers himself as a mentor for the young players coming into the national team and not in a hurry to call it quit from the national team.

“Gyan believes he is a role model for most of the players and regardless of his role in the national team.

At any point in time, he is willing to give his brotherly support to any leader present and is only interested in serving Ghana in any capacity. This is the best decision taken by CK Akunnor,” he added.

Gyan is Ghana’s top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.
